PERSONAL HYGIENE

Use skin moisturizer to prevent dry skin, which is vulnerable to germs
Don't go around barefoot
Use contact solution that includes disinfectant
Wash hands before, during and after cooking

HEALTHY HABITS & PRACTICES

To stave off colds, use echenecea, ginseng and zinc lozenges
Avoid secondhand smoke
Drink water in dry air (usually caused by heaters)
Keep eyes at least 20 inches from the computer monitor

A GERM-FREE ENVIRONMENT

Use sanitizing laundry detergent
Bleach your whites
Drink bottled or filtered water
In public restrooms, use the stall closest to the door, which is usually least used
Clean the bottom of your purse
Wash new clothes before wearing

FOOD HANDLING & PREPARATION

Use separate cutting boards (plastic, not wood) for raw meat and other foods
Keep fridge at 40 degrees or lower and freezer between 0 and -5
Break large amounts of leftovers into smaller containers. Refrigerate while still very warm, but not hot.
Heat ground beef to 160 degrees, chicken to 180. Don't overcook.
Cook eggs until they're no longer runny
Thaw and marinate food in the fridge, not on the counter. Microwave is okay.
Prepare vegetables before preparing meat
Don't pack the fridge tight. Air needs to circulate.
Store meat on the bottom shelf of the fridge
Shop for cold and frozen foods last

HOME & PERSONAL SAFETY

Wear your seat belt and bike helmet
Turn pot handles to the wall while cooking
Keep garage door down at all times, even when outside
When climbing down a ladder, footstool, wall, etc. go backward, not forward
Don't use electric blankets underneath any other type of blanket
Keep gasoline and other flammable liquids in airtight containers
Inspect toys for breaks, cracks or ripped seams
Use proper lifting, pulling and pushing technique
Warm up before doing yardwork and pace yourself
Unplug portable appliances when not in use
Check your smoke detectors
Coat vinyl floors with non-skid wax
