Get a kitchen trash can that is the right size to be lined with those plastic bags that grocery stores use to bag your groceries. You will have to take the kitchen can to your big garbage can more frequently, but the payoff is a fresher smelling kitchen and no money spent on bags.
If you recycle and don't have that much trash, it works very well. I can hide the small wastebasket under the sink, too

As anyone who is the subject of a cat, they truly believe they are the King or Queen of the household. In their minds, that means they can go anywhere the wish. We're cat people and have found an excellent way to keep them from the table kitchen counter and bookshelves. Line the edges with empty soda cans. Make sure the cans are far enough back that your Royal Highness can't see them, and just wait. Soon, you'll hear the cans and see the cat streaking for safety. It takes about a week before
your Master or Mistress gets disgusted with your stupid human tricks and will completely ignore all the things you want to protect - and keep cat hair out of. Occasionally an additional inoculation needs to be given, but this usually only requires 2-3 days.
I never throw away socks. They are good to put on your hands or kids hands as a dust catcher. I like to use them to dust off electronics, air intakes, and anywhere that the kids can reach :) They also work well to use as a dry erase eraser.
I keep my bag of socks on a hook under my kitchen sink so that they are handy.
