You are so right, and its not only with buying clothing. It goes for absolutely everything, including groceries, household appliances, etc. Ok, I'm not denying there are bargains to be had out there, but on the whole I've learned that cheapest is not necessarily the best or most economical when the cost is worked out over time. Just one minor example of this is toilet tissue. I've always bought a low priced 2-ply multi-pack of either 6, 8 or 12 rolls when they were on sale. I bought a more expensive pack of 4 thicker 3-ply rolls for the same price as my usual brand of 8 rolls which were on sale just to see if my friend was right in saying the cheaper ones were false economy. She was right - the 4 rolls by far outlasted the 8 rolls of the cheaper brand, they lasted an extra fortnight! I've definitely come to look at 'cheaper' items more closely before automatically buying them.
