When I receive "extra" money or money I didn't expect, it goes into our money market account. "Unexpected money" is what I find in pockets, under cushions or on the street, rebates, bonuses, overtime, refunds, pay raises, gifts & what's left in checking accounts the day before pay day. Along with regular monthly deposits, we always have enough to pay cash for anything we need. (click title for more info)
Once a sizable amount is accumulated in our money market account, we leave enough there for emergencies, then invest in a stock which has been historically stable & pays a good dividend (5 to 20% annually.) Right now most savings/money market accounts pay pathetic interest (1.25% or less APY.)
Take advantage of those charities in the malls that will wrap your gift(s) for a small donation. If you wrap the way I do, you take EVERY opportunity to have someone else wrap your gifts. If a store offers free gift wrapping, I take advantage of it. But it's really great to have use a charity to wrap your gift for you. The charity gets money, and your gift looks lovely!
I received a "Soda Stream" machine for Christmas, and it was the best gift EVER. It allow me to make my own sparkling water - with or with out natural flavorings. Before I received it, I spent tons of money on La Croix and other commercial soda waters. My results from the machine taste better, cost less, and doesn't require transporting/recycling of tons of bottles. I also have soda pop mixes, which are fun for parties. It's definitely improved my water consumption!
