Buy large boxes of salad greens and keep them fresh by adding a paper towel to the box and refrigerating it upside down. The paper towel will absorb excess moisture so the greens will stay fresher longer.

I've been doing almost the same thing for years. I use a gallon size zip lock bag and wash and spin the lettuce first then add paper towel to the bag first then the lettuce. Lettuce lasts a long time and is ready to eat. emoticon

I ALSO PUT A PAPER TOWEL IN THE BOTTOM OF CONTAINER AND THE SPINACH & LETTUCE STAYS FRESHER FOR DAYS. I LIKE THE IDEA OF PUTTING A PIECE OF CLOTH INSTEAD OF A PAPER TOWEL WHICH I DEFIANTLY TRY.

Interesting. I've tried it, and it doesn't seem to work for me. Oh, maybe for 1 or 2 days.

I will try it. My lettuce gets brown and I waste a lot of it. Thanks

When I'm out of paper towels, I just wrap them up in old newspaper.
@ Peace39, I don't think so, in my experience it only works for leafy vegetables

Does this work for strawberries? I have had problems this whole summer with them molding before I get to them.

A piece of unbleached cotton fabric is good too and you can put it in the wash.

slimy lettuce or spinacy....YUCK! I'm definitely going to try this one.
ACOLL80 6/2/2010 11:56:00 AM

My mom told me this years ago and I have always done it. It really does work. There is nothing worse than brown or wet lettuce a day or two after you bought it!
