I find it motivational to talk to other people in the gym. They have good ideas and help push me when working out on the Elliptical, Treadmill, Bike or involved in taking fitness classes. I workout at the gym at work and it has close to 500 members (4000+on campus) & 3 staff that really motivate me.
Even on days when some of the very fit people are not feeling up to pushing themselves 30-40 minutes on the Elliptical if they are next to me and we make it into a competition to see who gets the most miles in and get past the 30 minutes to 40 minutes. Everyone wins.
