I totally do this! I'm glad i'm not the only one. I often wonder if they see me looking over at there machine to see how long they've been going and how far they have gone. I mostly do this with the elliptical.

I do this too...LOL. Good thing we don't go to the same gym. I also make sure I'm going faster than them too.

lol! This is awesome, but what happens when the person next to you is secretly using the same strategy?

I exercise at home so I race against myself to get one more mile or 5 more minutes or to the next hundred for calories. Sometimes it is the only way to get in the extra time on days that I'm tired.

A little friendly competition
Sometimes loosing weight with someone else and having a friendly competition can be helpful.
MORE INFORMATION:
For myself, I find that if I have a weight loss buddy who likes a little fun, friendly competition, it can go a long way in assisting me to reach my goals. When I want to give, knowing that I am trying to beat someone's weigh in, keeps me motivated and dedicated to the goals I have set.
Find someone at the gym (make sure they're doing something you enjoy!) who clearly loves to sweat, and set up a mental competition with him/her - try to keep up the intensity, speed, duration, and attitude! with which s/he approaches the workout. Getting lost in this competition passes time and feels super rewarding in the end. It's always hard to challenge our own bodies in the way others do!
