Strength Training Vs. Cardio -----The First Month

Members Were Sparked
This Sparked Me!

Strength training raises your metabolism HIGHER so you burn calories LONGER. Cardio helps you burn calories FASTER but for shorter spurts. If you want to see results but can't stay in your caloric range for 1st month, this may help.

I am advanced in strength training so I knew what I was doing;hit my caloric range only 8x the 1st month and dropped 10 lbs.just because I added the strength training-which was working out on my Soloflex machine 2x/wk. Also 1x/wk-Yoga-1 hr/Gravity machinew/trainer 30 min/Treadmill --wogging 30 min.

I agree about the benefits of strength training. I try to do cardio 6 days a week, and get in 3 days of strength training. I've used stretch bands and hand dumbbells, and both seem to work great. If I'm at a plateau in weight loss, something is usually amiss in my weight training. I used to think that weight training for women just meant building BIG, bulky muscles, and I didn't want to look like a female body builder!! Not so--- unless a woman takes supplements, etc, weight training usually just trims and tones!! Don't we all want that?? And I can really see the benefits in weight loss also- sometimes within a couple weeks of strength training! I love to be able to eat sensibly and not have to STARVE to lose weight!! More muscle means a higher metabolism-- Try it!!! emoticon

I have had alot of trouble with this until i realized that most of what i do is actually considered both.

Since I started weight training, my cardio workouts make me sweat longer and heavier than before weight training. I can tell it has made a difference in my cardio workout and the weight is coming off faster.

I am a believer!

I do cardio 5 days a week and strength, or circuit training 3 days. Also walk and wogging. I love to exhaust myself lifting weights. When I leave the gym I feel I have really done something good or my body. I'm 70 going on 50.
HYATTI1 5/11/2012 10:03:00 PM

Thanks for the information I didn't know that.
CAMAEL100 5/11/2012 6:14:00 PM

This has definitely motivated me to do some strength training. I have been putting it off!
ACICEDA 5/11/2012 1:48:00 PM

That's inspirational. I hate strength training on my own and don't always have the time or schedule to attend a class. My husband loves it though and when we are on the same schedule going to the gym is a top prioroity for us. He'll help make sure I'm good on my form and doesn't ever mind me working in with him though I am trying to tone and he is trying to be a body builder.
DEARTOMYHEART 5/11/2012 12:48:00 PM

Thanks so much for your imput everyone. New to strength training. emoticon

I have always tried to do both...walk/run everyday and lift weights every other day...I love your term...Wogging, that's what I do.
CZEIDMAN 6/18/2010 9:01:00 AM

Now they are saying this is just an exaggeration too. Are there really no hard fast rules when it comes to losing weight?
MARY526 5/19/2010 8:07:00 AM

Thanks, I have always focused on Cardio vs Strength training. Now I think I'll pay more attention to the strength training part.
SLENDERELLA61 4/19/2010 9:32:00 AM
