For solid foods, I try to measure by the gram, with an electronic scale, whenever possible. It is the most precise unit of measurement, and is especially important with calorie dense foods, like almonds.

MORE INFORMATION:
Test it yourself. Look at the serving size options for a tin of nuts. It will most likely say 1 oz. (28 grams) or 1/4 cup. Do the 1/4 cup and then weigh it out. Chances are it will be several grams higher or lower than 28. This can make a difference of dozens of calories for calorie dense foods.
