I use two baskets for laundry. Our family knows that the whites go into one, and the colors go into the other. This pre-sorts the loads, and when a basket is full, any one of us can haul it down to the machine and start it. No sorting necessary :)

I use a similar system in my home with 4 bags on a hanging rack whites, colors, darks, and towels. All of the washing supplies are in a basket on the wall over the machines and the laundry basket is in front of the dryer so I'm more likely to hang things out on good days.
