Whole grains help you lose weight because they provide fiber and nutrients which help you feel full and meet more of your nutritional needs. I used to avoid brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat , popcorn, barley, etc, but then found them helpful. Pair with legumes for a main dish or side with meat.

Whenever I eat protein, like a soy patty or lean turkey sausage, with my bkfst, as opposed to whole grain cereal/oatmeal and fruit, I am fuller and more satisfied longer. Both types of meals are still 300 calories, but I am more satisfied with protein. It helps me stay on track.

I learned this from the Eat This, NOt That books. Read carefully when buying breads and things. If it says "wheat bread" or "made with wheat" or "made with whole grains", it is NOT WHOLE WHEAT/GRAIN. It just has some thrown in, and the rest is just processed white flour. It must say "Whole Wheat" or "100% whole wheat" for it to really be whole grain.
When I switched from white bread to whole grain bread I started experiencing upset stomachs. But when I tried sprouted whole grain bread instead, my stomach did not object. And another benefit is a great nutty flavor and hearty texture. I don't eat any other kind of bread now.
Try sprouted whole grain bread with a nut spread and banana slices for a filling and delicious treat!
