When the sale papers arrive I take 1/2 hour and go through them to write down what's on sale. I then plan my menu by the best sales. For the most part I only go to one store - once a week. If another store has one or two items on sale that are too good to pass up I will go but only for those item
Combine sales with coupons - save in reg. grocery stores more then big box stores.
I started using TVP, textured vegetable protein in most of my meat cooking. It looks a bit like oatmeal. Use about a 1c to 1 1/2c in a meat sauce, or a 1c + 1c water, let rehyd in lean ground meat, it has no fat but all the protein. TVP is tasteless, it takes on the favors you add, wonderful stuff.

Many grocery store receipts show the amount of money "saved" by using coupons, or value cards. I save my receipts and at the end of the week or month, I deposit those grocery store savings into my savings account.
For me this is a pretty painless and easy way for me to remember to set something aside each month for a little nest egg.
