I find if I plan my meals for the next day,even to putting the ingredients together in the fridge in separate bowls helps me want to stay on track the following day as my food is already sorted,so I can just get on with my day and I am not thinking about what I should eat for dinner!

That works for me and my dh also! It's fixed and ready to go so all we have to do is pull it out, warm it up, or put it together quick and eat!

By planning the night before I have saved a lot of beating myself up.

When you do plan ahead it helps if you have made some food groupings that you can just plunk in. Aiming for the lower limit on your suggested range means that you can have a small bit of wiggle room the next day.
Each night when I clean up after dinner, I make sure that I have things underway for the next night's dinner. I make sure that I know what I am planning to make and I double check that I have all ingredients. If something needs to be taken out and defrosted, I get that done.
