I keep a jump rope & a weighted hula hoop beside my couch. While watching TV I jump 50 to 100 reps ea. way & hoop for 60 sec. ea. way. I set a goal to complete this combination 3-5 times every 10-15 min. I feel refreshed and amazed at the number of calories I've burned by the end of a show!
Besides the jump rope and hula hoop, I wear my heart rate monitor to measure calories burned. On my off days, when I'm not completing a full workout routine, I'll sometimes throw in some push ups, planks, squats and lunges.

Once you are at home always find something to do inside or outside of your home. Stay active and don't be a TV couch potato.
There is always something to be done, like mowing the lawn or picking up behind the small children. Better yet clean the kitchen cabinets, clean the bathe and toilet.. You will enjoy the results.
Whenever I plan an evening of being a couch potato I make myself get up at every commercial break and do a chore. Most chores just take the 2 - 3 minute break. It gets me off the couch every little bit AND I get my chores done without feeling like a slave to housework.
For the length of at least 1 sitcom a day, instead of sitting on the couch I walk or jog in place in front of the TV. It may not burn a ton of calories, but it is definitely better than being a couch potato!
