When I have a day that just seems to go all pear shaped I try to think of one positive thing. Usually just thinking about my nieces and nephews smiling cheers me right up. If that doesn't cheer me up I go for a jog and that clears my head as well!

I personally don't think positive thinking is as easy as flipping a switch. But gradual re-shaping from negative thoughts can be made easier. Whenever any negative thought occurs (and you'll soon become aware of just how many you have daily!), immediately counter it with the opposite positive one. That way, your brain will start to get used to the awareness of the sunnier side of life. Reinforce the positive by spending more time thinking of the positive thought.
Find something great or positive to smile about within the life you live, think a funny thought, think about a best friend a loved one, a family member who brings joy to your life and smile about it. You would be surprised how it can brighten your day!!
