I do not phone, email, text, etc. family and people having a stressful time. Wait til they contact me. They will be more personable. I don't need to jump in to "help save the day" getting in their face. Don't go looking for real or stupid stress that will result in emotional eating.
Waiting eliminates a lot of stress for me. Often the situation is handled well by the time they contact me. Or I can give a non emotional comment. And I don't make a bad situation worse or get my head bit off. I can be a positive person in the situation.
