Secrets of Success

Walk And Talk

I clock up a surprising number of steps every week - and so burn extra calories - by using a cordless phone and walking as I talk. As a bonus, this distracts me from snacking, I wear a pedometer and walk purposefully (although I don't count this as cardio).

  • I've recently started doing this! It's great; I have a figure 8 pattern I can walk through two rooms and can easily add 2 miles to my steps on a talk with my daughter or a friend. It's those special, long calls that work and I do count it as cardio as it's non-stop. Makes me wonder why I ever owned a treadmill! - by JOYINKY

Think of all the times you can walk to add extra steps. You can walk in place while watching TV, waiting for the microwave or for water to boil, waiting for the wash or dry cycle to end. Our old house is rather cold, so I get up from my desk to run in place until I get warm (maybe 5 min) and that keeps me warm for up to an hour. I try to do subtle movements everywhere ----flex my butt or do ankle circles in a doctor's waiting room or suck in my stomach while waiting for a bus. I figure every minute I am moving a muscle, even a little more than usual, I am burning a few calories. - by STORMY724
