    Crunches or sit-ups do help strengthen your back. But you must listen to your back also. It depends on what kind of problems you have. Sit-ups may agravate one type where reverse-crunches will actually help.

    Pilates will do the same thing, strengthen your core and save your back. I was doing it for awhile and it really helped, now I need to get back to it.
