If you like crunchy, fresh lettuce that will keep in your refrigerator for at least 1 week, try this tip. Buy you a Foodsaver from Costco, buy a dozen wide mouth mason jars from Walmart, and order a wide mouth sealer from Foodsaver (about $8.00) I like to buy Romain Lettuce in bulk, chop it into bite size, wash and spin, pack in jars and seal. The lettuce will stay dry, and super crunchy. A money saver and a super easy way to make a wonderful salad.

I buy romain lettuce in bulk from a warehouse club and keep it fresh by putting the heads in zippered plastic bags (unwashed) with a couple of paper towels. The paper towels absorb the moisture and the lettuce stays fresh for up to 2 weeks. This also works for other veggies and salad greens like spinach.
I discovered this by accident. I put a head of lettuce in a metal bowl in the fridge and added a few ice cubes. The lettuce didn't turn brown for days! I just empty the water and put fresh ice cubes in as I use my lettuce. I cover the bowl with saran wrap also.
Buy a head of iceberg lettuce, take off only the outer leaves and discard (the nasty ones). Do NOT remove the core (as my mother taught me), keep the lettuce inside an air tight bag and tear off only what you need. The lettuce will last up to a week or more, saving you money. It took me 20 years to figure this one out!
