I was a brand name shopper for many years. After I was out of work for back surgery, i needed to find ways to cut expenses. I found that the store brands are just as good in some cases. I buy mostly store brands now and I feel I get so much more for my money.

Many store brands come off the same line as name brands. Manufacturer's sell their excess capacity for private label products. I recently tried store brand soda similar to Coke Zero. I couldn't tell the different and it was half the price. (ok, no soda lectures)
If you want to buy better quality clothes because they last longer and look better, or you find certain brands are the only ones that fit you well, try looking on Oxfam's second hand store website where you can search for particular brands and sizes, and you can specify brand new items still with tags on, so you can even get decent bras new at reduced cost- the range of sizes varies depending on what's been donated, but I have seen some of the harder to find sizes as well as the standard ones.
