I have found this method to work for saving money: get envelopes and label them with your bills you pay monthly (ie mortgage, light bill, water bill, etc.) and label one envelope Miscellaneous. Each month put the amount you owe on the bill plus $10 in the envelope. Pay the miscellaneous envelope $20. Once you pay all your bills, move the money from the other envelopes to the miscellaneous envelope and watch your money build up!
I ran out of business size envelopes. I pay my bills on line but all my Mom's bills (which I do) have to go out snail mail. I took the mail back envelopes from my bills and reused them on my Moms by placing a sticker over the address. Saved trees, too!
Don't buy envelopes, use the ones you get in the mail
Instead of buying envelopes, I use the ones that I get in junk mail and bills (I pay online, so I don't need the envelopes). I put the address labels I get from companies who want me to buy stuff or donate money over the return address. If there's a clear window or address printed in the "mail to" area of the envelope, I cover it with a piece of paper taped or glued in place and put the correct address on it.
