To help drink more water I keep an insulated cup with a straw at work (a water bottle with a built in straw works too). It is much easier to take a quick one handed drink from a straw than having to take a cap off a water bottle. Switching to a straw has doubled my water intake and it seems like a treat =0)

I foolishly put my "Tervis" type (rigid) straw in the dishwasher. When I pulled it out it was no longer straight. To fix it (straighten) the straw back, I put 2 metal kabob skewers inside the straw and ran it back through the dishwasher. The skewers held the straw straight when the plastic was heated up.
If you have a water glass with a straw, using a Q-tip will help clean the straw, the place where the straw goes and the mouth piece. It is the perfect size for mine. Of course it does depends on the size. You can also use a chopstick to push the Q-tip through the straw to clean all the way down.
