Before putting on your socks, rub your feet with a decent layer of foot cream, be it petroleum jelly, or Gold Bond foot cream, or cocoa butter, or something sort of thick. Once you put your socks over it, the socks stay put and keeps them from rubbing against you. It's helped soften up my feet quite a bit and keeps the rubbing to a minimum. I know it seems like it would feel weird, but you don't even notice it once the socks are on!

A friend of mine shared this secret. When putting on new shoes for the first day and you can tell they are going to rub, try putting some stick deoderant on the place where the shoe is rubbing. So far I have had great luck with this!!
