As a young kid living in Puerto Rico, I never thought of the health benefits of the food I ate. I even underestimated the abundance and benefits of tropical fruits and root vegetables. It seems like everyone in the neighborhood had an avocado tree, we did! Avocados, much like many other tropical fruits, such as plantains, bananas, guavas, and acerolas (also known as Barbados cherries) are abundant and readily available in the island and are considered a staple in every meal. It is refreshing to know that for once, I was eating the right things!
