In striving for 10,000 steps a day, I walk the terminal instead of sitting at the gate and waiting for the plane to board.
Face it, planes don't leave early and there are plenty of boards listing departure gates and times to keep checking should your gate or departure time change. Besides - you'll have plenty of time to "sit" on the plane!

Airport walking is a great way to squeeze in exercise when flying. Whenever I find myself with a 2 hour layover I make sure to spend at least an hour of that time walking laps around the airport. You can window-shop and people-watch just like when you're mall walking.
I fly a lot with work. I find it is easier to maintain if I NEVER eat plane food or drink anything besides water. Even a McDonald's salad is better nutritionally than plane food, so I either eat at the airport or order something takeout at the airport during layovers and take it with me for long flights.
