I love that line from Bethany Frankel's Skinny Girl: You can't wrap up your leftovers and mail them to the starving people in Africa. Therefore, I will eat 1/2 of a treat (brownie, piece of cake) and throw the rest away.

Don't deprive yourself of anything, just learn to balance treats out by cutting back on something else.
A lot of people completely cut out chocolate, cheese, butter, cream, etc, etc, and think they are doing the right thing. But all this achieves is to make themselves feel deprived. For example, a small scrape of butter is far better (and tastier) than any amount of made in a lab substitute butter!
