Before you spread mulch in areas without a lot of perennials, spread 3-5 sheets of newspaper down and add the mulch. No weeds all summer, water gets through and it's not bad on the soil. It will decompose by next year. . emoticon emoticon emoticon

We do this, but it is also important to use black and white newspapers, not ones with color ink too. I does work great.

I think I will try this under the cedar mulch that I get every year. Maybe I wouldn't have to use as much mulch for next year! emoticon

You are so right ... also no shiny sheets that won't allow water to go through!
