I really love my Garmin Forerunner 305. While I don't feel they are necessary for a good running workout, it's very nice to be able to track my speed and my distance. I find it very motivating! It also has a marker function that tells me what direction to run in to get home if I get lost!
I got mine on Amazon. Their price on the 305, which has a heart rate monitor function, is quite good.

After struggling with keeping my runs to routes I can copy in the car to get the milage, I bought a Garmin Forerunner 305. It tracks mileage, pace, time, plus laps and racing against your previous times.
I compared the 200 through 400 series before settling on the 305. Sure, it is true that a runner only needs a good pair of shoes, but this optional piece of equipment was $150 very well spent.
EatSmart Precision Pro - Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scale w/ Extra Large LCD
Love it! It is sleek and clean looking (mine is white w/chrome top.) It has a tare feature that subtracts the weight of the container for you. Very precise! Helps me track my nutrition with more accuracy.
