While decorating for the Girl Scout Halloween party today, one of the leaders shared an Awesome idea. She uses those push lights (as seen on tv - those battery operated lights they sell to use in closets and such) inside her jack o lanterns instead of candles. They are much brighter than other things and no flames to worry about!!!

Cut the bottom off the pumpkin instead of the top.
When you are about to begin carving your pumpkin I suggest you try cutting the bottom off instead. That way all you have to do to light the candle or turn on the battery candle is lift up the pumpkin off it's base. No more shoving your arm into a wet and slimey pumpkin. EW! The pumpkin lasts longer, too. Happy Halloween!
More homes heat and cook with electric, and fewer people smoke cigarettes, so homes often keep a low supply of matches. But when birthdays, quiet dinners or other events need candles lit, light a few candles with one match. But after that match burns out, light or re-light the remaining candles with twist-ties (the kind that come with plastic bags but are rarely used) ignited by candles already lit. The twist-ties last about as long as a short match.
