Whenever I go to a restaurant that has a buffet, I ask to order off the menu. I've learned that I just don't have the willpower for a buffet, and I'm always trying to "eat my money's worth." I'm just as satisfied with a plate of my own.
Plus, if you order off the menu, you can always ask for a to-go box and take some of your meal home.

Check out the menu BEFORE you get to the restaurant
Don't make an impulsive or bad decision when ordering off the menu at a restaurant. Most restaurants have their menus online. Read the menu before you go (even if you've been there before) and make a smart decision. Let Google help you find menus.
When my family eats out or if I'm calling in an order to pick up, I order off the kids menu. I can still satisfy my craving for a hamburger or spaghetti but with the kids menu it is a smaller portion and therefore less calories.
I will usually get a diet soda with the kids meal because the drink cups are so small. And if I run out of my drink before I'm done eating, I drink water. That way, I can still satisfy my craving for soda and I know that I will get plenty of water when I'm done.
