When I gave up soda, I did it by drinking water-- every time I went to grab a soda, THOUGHT about grabbing a soda, or even SAW soda, I drank a glass of water instead. After a few weeks, I was off soda for good, and onto a healthy water habit. My partner gave up soda by switching out his soda with seltzer water. You can buy it in a variety of flavors (usually in the soda aisle or water aisle) and it's a GREAT alternative if you still want the fizzy comfort.
MORE INFORMATION:
You can usually find seltzer water in 12 packs or 2 liter bottles at your local grocer. You may also find tonic water, which is seltzer with added sodium.

Just Quit Cold Turkey
I needed to omit coca-cola from my life, so I just quit cold turkey 25 months ago. I never gave myself the option to cut back on the amount I drank per day or switching to diet coke. I just quit and never looked back.
Sounds easy, but it worked for me. Before I joined SP, I substituted diet cola for my 3-4 regular colas per day and lost 10 pounds after 3 months without changing anything else in my routine. Not only did I begin NOT to crave regular cola anymore, my sweet tooth diminished TREMENDOUSLY. I used to LOVE colas (and had a sweet tooth), so this was a baby step to eliminate regular colas entirely from my diet, and limit diet soda to less than one a day. Now it's mainly unsweet hottea for me!
