I find that if I don't understand something it does not mean much. Say, for instance, what are the different calorie counts for fats, carbohydrates and protein. Once I understand that fats and carbohydrates contain almost twice the calories as protein, I can make a more educated choice in my foods. Reading helps motivate me also. Knowledge is power! I have taught myself that if I don't know the calorie count of something I want to eat. I don't eat it. I keep a daily food log along with calories and protein. If I can't find out the calories it doesn't go into my mouth. It's working so far
