Healthy Water For Traveling To Developing Countries

Steri-pen was the solution to getting enough drinking water while spending 3 weeks in South America. The pen (about the size of a small flashlight) kills 99.9% of bacterial, viruses and protozoa in water in moments. A small UV light sterilizes either a liter or .5 liter of water while you stir your glass or water bottle. Perfect solution while traveling when often the only safe thing to drink is soda or alcohol. A good way to get those 8 cups even while traveling.

I'm going on a trip to South America in about a month. Most of the time I will stay with friends who probably use water filters, but those take out debris and often don't kill the microbes that can cause illnesses. I'm already hemoraging money after paying for the plane fare, passport, visa, & other items needed, so I am reluctant to buy anything else, but this would also come in handy while hiking. (When I lived in Brazil, I filtered my water through a clean cloth to take out large debris, then I boiled it for at least 20 min., then put it thru a water filter with a ceramic filter. By the way if you have a ceramic filter, a handful of sugar rubbed over it cleans it nicely, followed by a clean water rinse.)

I spent a month in Brazil, including time during a water borne illness outbreak. I used the Steri-pen for all water out of the tap-even the glassful I used to brush my teeth: Not one twinge of any 'problems.' Check travel catalogs like Magellan's, TravelSmith or REI for the pen. I also took a solar battery recharger with me for mine.

Sounds wonderful. Where do you get them. I've gotten sick a couple of times overseas from the water, even though I was careful. Would love to try these
Thanks so much!
