I'm not one for stringent plans, but when it comes to meals, it's necessary to have a solid idea. When I know what I'm eating for my next meal or snack, it's easy to stay focused, as my mind is not thinking about WHAT to eat. That's when temptation sets in. Always have your meals planned. Or at least a good idea.

I have a notebook in Evernote with a separate note for each restaurant I visit and what the best options are for my diet plan in each. I don't write down the "best options" that I wouldn't like either - just what I'd actually order. With my smart phone, I have that custom reference to keep me on track.
Having a plan is half the battle, having it HANDY is the other half.
Don't leave weight maintenance as an afterthought! Start researching and planning for weight maintenance before or while losing weight. Approximately how many calories will you need while maintaining? What kind of exercise plan will you do? How will you manage cravings? Having a plan well ahead of time will make us better prepared for setbacks we may encounter once the enthusiasm of weight loss wears off.
