  • Actually, I always leave the root end on when chopping onions, and I use a LOT of onions in my cooking...and it makes no difference. Some onions are just more tear inducing than others, and I suspect it has something to do with dry growing seasons, or how long the onion has been in storage... There ARE a few varieties, the Texas 1015 Sweet and the Vidalia Sweet yellow onions which are milder, but even THEY can induce tears if old enough. ...just something I've learned from experience... - by MCJULIEO
