I plan ahead with meals as much as possible and I always try to put them into the nutrition tracker in the morning before I have lunch and dinner. This way I can see what I'm lacking and may need to add in and what I'm getting too much of and need to cut out. This is especially helpful for me with eating out. I'll look up a restaurants nutrition facts and if I can't afford that many calories today I move on to another place and plan ahead that way.
