I hate throwing out good food, but I agree, it was a good day when I realized i was better off if I tossed the leftovers and saved my body.
Then again, other days I'll just eat their leftovers as my meal. For example, I'm too busy running around while serving my kids breakfast to eat anyway, and I KNOW there will be left over cereal and milk -- because they're just not coordinated enough to get all the cereal from the bowl. So I pour their bowls together and add whatever I still need for a full meal -- no leftover waste and no excess calories.

The leftovers in my chidren's plate is garbage
I make it a rule to never pick at my children's leftovers in their plate. If it is something that I think they will eat later, I wrap it and put it in the fridge for them...otherwise I throw it in the garbage. THEIR food is not part of my daily meal plan and picking at a french fry here and there or finishing a half eaten oreo cookie add up to extra unwanted and unaccounted for calories. We wouldn't pick at an adult's plate...so why pick at our kids plates.
The perfect way to make sure leftovers get eaten -- schedule them in on the food planner when you add the original meal. It's easy! You can copy the food group directly over and, for me at least, I'm making my lazy work for me. I'd almost rather just eat the leftovers that I planned than remove all those foods and add in what I really ate. Double win: leftovers get eaten AND tracked!
