You can eliminate the cost of paper towels by using old cotton t-shirts for those messes. If you're a neat freak, you can cut them to a rectangular shape. You can wash the t-shirts in hot water and bleach to make them refreshed for use. Most will last for 25+ years even when washed weekly.
You'll find it quickly to clean up messes because you can absorb quicker, scrub harder and rinse out and re-use quickly.

Recycle old phone books and reduce amount of trees needlessly ground up for paper towels which are a tool of the disposable society in which we live. Use phone book pages in place of paper towels to clean paint brushes before contaminating water with excess latex wall or fine arts acrylic paint.
Sew a drawstring bag from two kitchen towels. When you wash your lettuce, you can put it in the bag and shake so that the towels absorb the moisture. The towel bag can be washed and recycled. Use this for washing grapes too! 140277
I always use real towels when I wash my veggies. I loath using paper towels both for the money lost, and the waste of paper. I save paper towels for things like draining cooked bacon.
Pouring from my olive oil bottle can cause drips to flow down the side of the bottle, making a mess. I solved this problem by setting the bottle on a folded square of paper towel, pulling the towel up around the sides of the bottle (as if you were wrapping a bottle of wine) and securing the paper towel around the bottle with a rubber band. The towel catches any drips that may occur. Change the towel every few months. Clean bottle and hands! :-)
