I never go grocery shopping hungry. This helps keep me from buying junk food due to hunger pains. And I always stick to my grocery shopping list - if it's not on the list, I don't buy it. This not only keeps me from buying excess or junk food, but saves me money by not picking up other items we don't necessarily need.

Make a list when you need to go shopping. It can be food shopping. It can be clothes shopping. It can be hardware shopping. A list will help you stay focused and on track. I've also found I spend less if I give the list to my hubby. He sticks to the list like glue!
