Some Kindle books are free on amazon.com and other sites. In addition, they are putting many in public libraries where you check them out online and then return them. The best thing is that you don't have to own a Kindle - you can use your PC or smartphone to read them.

If you have a Nook or any other ereader (with the exception of Kindle) you can 'rent' books from the state library for free. You are allowed to check out a maximum of 4 books at a time for a maximum of 2 weeks at a time. I live in Maryland and my web info is: www.maryland.lib.overdrive.com I have been enjoying free books for over a year now. These do NOT work on a kindle, however, which is why I opted for a Nook.
