Cleaning out your closet (the long term plan)
Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between the clothes you wear and the clothes you like but never wear. Use this method and be on your way to a decluttered closet in 30 days.
When my closet becomes too cluttered, I go in and turn all the hangers (with the clothes on them) backwards. Any item that I wear gets washed and hung back up with a forward facing hanger. At the end of 30 days, any garments that are still on backwards hangers gets donated to good will.

Some of the stores I shop in leave the plastic hangers on the clothes when you buy them. I prefer to use my own sturdier hangers, but the ones I get with my clothing I donate to Goodwill. I figure they can always use the extra hangers since they sell a lot of clothes, and it's a great way to recycle them.
Turn all of your clothes hangers so the open part faces out. Then as you put away clean clothes after wearing, turn the hangers so the open part faces the back of the closet. By changing the direction of the hangers you can easily see what you've worn and every few months clear out unworn clothes.
