i was speaking with a soldier from the army who told me that since his tour in iraq, he rarely feels rattled. why? b/c he tells himself - no one is shooting at me here.
i do not serve in the military but i still use this mantra as a way for me to put things in perspective. yes, sometimes there are pretty tough things that happen in my life, but you know what? no one is shooting at me. i can handle it & it will pass.

I've found that keeping a gratitude journal helps me tremendously while trying to lose weight. It forces me to put things in perspective and realize that on even the worst days, good things still creep in there to motivate us onward.
Today I was feeling sorry for myself because my children are busy and I don't see them, or talk to them, as often as i would like. This is exactly the kind of thing that would have caused me to binge eat in the past. Instead my husband gave me a big hug and helped me put things in perspective, and show me that I still have a place in their lives. Thank you, Peter!
When I start to have negative thoughts, it usually leads to feeling depressed - the best way to change those thoughts is to write 12 things on a Gratitude List - even if some of them seem trivial, like "I'm grateful I have soap," or tinged with negativity, like "only gained 20 lbs instead of 30," it still works like a magic cure! After all, a lot of people DON'T have soap or DID gain more than I did and it helps to put things into perspective. Maybe my life isn't so bad after all ;-)
