Treadmill Backwards!

Members Were Sparked
This Sparked Me!

My chiropractor just gave me an awesome workout for ab muscles that I'd never have thought to try: she told me to set the treadmill to about a 15% incline, get on it facing "the wrong way" (ie, not towards the control panel), and start it moving at a slow speed, increasing gradually, and walk uphill BACKWARDS. This works abs and front-of-body stability muscles. It is SO FUN and really amusing to do while everyone else is using their treadmills the conventional way!

Hah, I would never have thought to do this on a treadmill, for some reason I'm more afraid of falling there despite the handrails! (If they extend that far, depends on hte machine) But I love doing this on hills, especially when I get to that point of "I can't take another step!" Turn around, "look how far I've come, take a few steps, I'm still going!"
PYNETREE 7/26/2012 8:15:00 AM

This sounds great - for those that feel confidant doing it. If you don't have good balance or stability on the Treadmill, don't try this

But thanks for sharing this. It is a great tip! And might break up the boredom of plodding away on the Dreadmill for long mind-numbing stretches. emoticon

On more than one occasion, my treadmill has nearly bored me to death.

I meet with a trainer once a month to set up a monthly round of exercises, and I will be asking about this backward and sidewards use of the treadmill.

Sounds terrific and if my trainer is good with it, I'll go with it.
SUPERTAM 2/11/2013 1:27:00 AM

I walk backwards on the treadmill at 15% incline all the time & didn't even realize its working my abs!! I thought it only works the back & front of my thighs! Thanks!! That info was very helpful to me!! emoticon
