We have a family of 5, so we end up with a lot of plastic bags from the grocery store.
We bring them back and reuse them at the store, some stores will pay you for reusable bags (Price Chopper will credit you $.03 a bag). One trip to the store will credit me $.45, doesn't seem like a lot, but in a year, that's almost $24, and that's just for one trip a week!!
We stick them in the small garbage cans (instead of buying little garbage bags). Huge savings!!

Steel Wool

After use, put your steel wool in a plastic bag and store it in the freezer. It will not rust

a different protein

I started using TVP, textured vegetable protein in most of my meat cooking. It looks a bit like oatmeal. Use about a 1c to 1 1/2c in a meat sauce, or a 1c + 1c water, let rehyd in lean ground meat, it has no fat but all the protein. TVP is tasteless, it takes on the favors you add, wonderful stuff.
