I have had success in reducing clutter this way. When I walk into a room and see something that does not belong there, or that is out of place I take care of it right then. It is easier for me than letting things pile up and then having to spend much more time returning items to their rightful places.
I think this habit has been developed by following the flylady.com system for housework. There are a couple of teams here at spark for those who follow flylady.

I find that if I tidy up around me, keep at the dishes, and vacuum the house, I feel better, emotionally, and am better able to function. You can literally 'see your way clear' to other projects and tend to feel less overwhelmed.
