Place clean coffee cans filled with charcoal briquette's (not those with lighter fluid) around your basement, they will absorb basement smells. You can change the briquette's every 3 or 4 months, you can tell when they need changing. I have a large basement and have 6 cans down there.

Keep washer/dryer in basement

My washer & dryer are in the basement and NOT next to the bedrooms. When we do laundry(even the kids) we all have to spend time running up and down the stairs from the basement to the second floor, for extra exercise. On laundry days my pedometer count is higher.
