Restaurant food is often very rich. If you go there while being totally starved, you'll eat the whole plate, would you? But if you eat a little bit BEFORE, you'll eat less and could even bring back some food home for another meal! :)

    Eat something that is high in fiber or better yet drink a high fiber drink. When you take the edge off your appetite you are more likely to order something sensible that will fit into your diet plan. Also, when I go to a buffet I fill my plate with veggies before I add an entrée to my plate. With at least 75% of my plate filled with veggies doesn't leave enough space for too many calories of entrée.
