Pay attention to the transaction when you check out at a store. While you can generally expect honest clerks in the store, that doesn't mean that there won't be problems. Many of them are directly caused by the computerized cash register system. Challenge any charge that doesn't look right to you.

MORE INFORMATION:
Do your challenging while your order is still in the system. The minute you have paid, a challenge gets more complicated and usually needs a manager to clear up the conflict.

This is so important. Often times, the specials aren't in the computer and you may not notice till you are home. Then, how many people really go back if it is less than a dollar off?
I watch as the items are scanned and I question it when I notice a difference between what the cash register says and the price where I picked it up.
