In many if not most baked goods, you can substitute unsweetened applesauce for cooking oil. 1/2 cup applesauce for 1/2 oil--and muffins, etc. are just as moist and delicious--and lower in fat and calories!

Applesauce with crackers- sounds weird - but a tasty alternative to fatty dips
Next time you are going to have crackers and dip for a snack. Try a little unsweetened applesauce instead. the mix of the sweet and salty is really satisfying at a fraction of the calories. Add some sliced pears, grapes and a small serving of sliced cheese and you have a nice light lunch!
Unsweetened applesauce is an excellent fat (eg, oil, butter or shortening) substitute for many baked goods. Generally, you use half as much applesauce as the recipe calls for fats. You will need to experiment some, because different fats produce different chemical reactions (eg, thickening, crispness) that applesauce doesn't always replicate. Worth the effort for the huge amount of calories saved!
