I always just assumed that holding in the stomach was a norm on all exercises to get to the core and make it stronger.

The jeans game
I went to a thrift store and bought 3 inexpensive jeans, kinda tight but not to tight. When those jeans start to feel lose I take those old jeans back to the thrift store then buy another 3 kinda snug jeans. I could tell I was losing weight buy the way the jeans felt, and it makes me feel like I accomplished something.
